What Counselling Can Help With

Counselling can help manage and address a range of thoughts, feelings, emotions and behaviours that may be negatively impacting a person's life.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural and normal emotion, but sometimes it can feel paralysing, out of control and overwhelming. At times it prevents a person from doing things they want to do. Through therapy, I support clients to explore their anxiety, identify triggers, and develop effective coping strategies, helping to reduce the impact it has day to day.

Trauma

Traumatic experiences can be profound, affecting both emotional and physical health. Counselling provides a safe environment for individuals to process their trauma. I support clients on understanding the impact of trauma and support individuals move towards healing.

Life transitions

Life transitions, such as changing careers or school, moving to a new home, or experiencing significant life events, can be challenging and stressful. These changes often bring uncertainty and mixed emotions. Counselling can support individuals to navigate these changes.

Eating problems

Overeating, under-eating, or disorderly eating habits can significantly impact one's physical health and emotional well-being. Counselling can help individuals develop a healthier relationship with food and their body, by providing a private space to express inner thoughts and identify triggers.

The Process Of Working With Me

For new clients, the first step is to book an initial consultation. This is a slightly longer session where we discuss the areas you seek support in. Even if you're unsure of the exact issue and just feel unlike yourself, this consultation will help us understand your needs.

During this session

I will get to know you, and we will decide how best to work together. We will review and agree on the counselling agreement, a document outlining my responsibilities as a counsellor and the boundaries of our therapeutic relationship. In the initial consultation, we will also discuss your goals for counselling and any specific outcomes you hope to achieve. This helps to set a clear direction for our work together.

At the end of the initial consultation

Clients have the option to book their next session or schedule it later online. I recommend a minimum of six weekly sessions to fully experience the benefits of counselling, as it takes time to build the relationship and deeply explore the issues. However, I understand that each client's needs are different; some may require fewer than six sessions, while others may prefer less frequent meetings. The frequency and number of sessions are ultimately determined by what works best for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is counselling confidential?

Yes, counselling is confidential. Everything discussed in sessions remains private (even for children) with a few exceptions related to safety (such as risk of harm to oneself or others), this will be discussed in the initial consultation.

What issues can counselling help with?

Counselling can help with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, relationship problems, grief/loss, self-esteem, trauma, self harm, substance use and life transitions. It provides a supportive environment to explore and address these challenges.

What can I expect in the initial consultation?

In the first session, you will discuss your reasons for seeking counselling and your goals for therapy. This session helps to build rapport and supports me to understand your needs. Parents of children aged 15 or under should attend the first session so we can complete the counselling agreement together.

How long do counselling sessions typically last?

I offer a 1 hour and 15 minute consultation, then the following sessions will be 50 minutes.

How many counselling sessions will I need?

It is recommended for an individual to implement change in their life a minimum of 6 sessions is needed, but this is down to the person’s situation and how they feel. The choice is yours! You can choose to have more or less than 6 sessions.

How often do I need to attend sessions?

The frequency of counselling sessions varies based on individual needs and goals. I recommend starting weekly, but some clients prefer once a month or book as and when they feel they need the support. However the longer time between sessions can slow down the process if you are looking to implement change related to your thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

How do I know if my child needs counselling?

Signs that your child may benefit from counselling include persistent sadness or withdrawal from normal activities, worrying changes in behaviour, difficulties at school, anxiety, or challenges managing emotions. Sometimes a young person can identify themselves that they would like to get support. I always recommend speaking openly and honestly with your child to see if they would want to talk to someone. It is really important your child wants to engage in the support for it to be effective.

Can counselling help me?

Counselling can help with a range of situations and experiences. If you are unsure whether to book an appointment I'm happy to discuss your situation by phone or email, to ensure counselling would be appropriate for your needs. If after speaking with me, you feel you want to try something else, I can provide you with recommendations for alternative support.
