What Is Counselling

Counselling is ‘talking therapy’ where a trained counsellor spends focused time talking to individuals about their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. The goal is to help people understand and manage their mental health issues, emotional difficulties, and relationship problems.

Why Talking Therapy:

Talking therapy is suitable for people of all ages and can be used to address a wide range of issues, from everyday stress to more severe mental health conditions. It’s a collaborative process, where the counsellor and client work together to achieve the client’s goals and improve their overall quality of life.

Counselling Provides:

  • Emotional Support: Provides a space to discuss difficult emotions and experiences.
  • Problem-Solving: Helps individuals find solutions to specific problems.
  • Mental Health Improvement: Addresses mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
  • Self-Awareness: Increases awareness of one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
  • Empowerment: Encourages individuals to take control of their lives and make informed decisions.

Areas counselling can help with:

Counselling can help manage and address a range of thoughts, feelings, emotions and behaviours that may be negatively impacting a person's life.

Relationship issues

Counselling can provide a supportive environment to explore relationships and figure out how best to manage conflicts and communication. I can support with challenges in romantic relationships, family dynamics, or friendships.

Self-Harm

Self-harm can be a hidden struggle and often misunderstood coping mechanism for dealing with intense emotional pain, anxiety, or depression. In counselling we can explore self-injurious behaviour and identify new ways to cope with emotions, reducing the reliance on self-harm, and begin the journey toward healing and recovery.

Intrusive thoughts

Intrusive thoughts can be distressing. These unwanted, repetitive thoughts can disrupt daily life and leave individuals feeling powerless. Counselling offers a safe space to explore and understand these intrusive thoughts so clients can regain control over their thoughts and find peace of mind.

Anger

Anger can be destructive, straining relationships and disrupting daily life. It often leaves individuals feeling misunderstood and powerless, unable to manage their intense emotions. I support clients to express anger constructively, improving their relationships and overall emotional well-being.

Therapy For All Ages

Seeking support for yourself or your child?

Loss/Grief

Experiencing loss and grief can be complex. Everyone processes grief differently, feeling a range of emotions and thoughts that cause confusion, anger or sadness. Together, we can work on processing your feelings, finding ways to forward at your own pace.

Substance Use

Dependancy on substances is often kept hidden from friends, family and colleagues which can create an isolating journey. Substance use can vary to different levels and for different reasons. Within therapy we can work on building healthier coping mechanisms, setting goals for recovery, and supporting you in making positive choices.

Depression

Sometimes it can feel like a grey cloud that won’t go away. Persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and isolation can make it feel difficult to see a way forward. Counselling is a supportive environment to explore emotions and discuss a path forward.

Stress

At various times in our lives, we will experience stressful situations. If stress becomes a persistent feeling, it can feel heavy and can cause sleep issues as well as physical ill-health. Through counselling clients can share their stresses and talk through them, exploring ways to manage stressful situations more effectively.

Let's Start Your Journey

If you're ready to take the first step towards improved emotional well-being, please schedule an initial consultation.

Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural and normal emotion, but sometimes it can feel paralysing, out of control and overwhelming. At times it prevents a person from doing things they want to do. Through therapy, I support clients to explore their anxiety, identify triggers, and develop effective coping strategies, helping to reduce the impact it has day to day.

Trauma

Traumatic experiences can be profound, affecting both emotional and physical health. Counselling provides a safe environment for individuals to process their trauma. I support clients on understanding the impact of trauma and support individuals move towards healing.

Life transitions

Life transitions, such as changing careers or school, moving to a new home, or experiencing significant life events, can be challenging and overwhelming. These changes often bring uncertainty and stress, making it difficult to cope. Counselling can support individuals to navigate these changes.

Eating problems

Overeating, under-eating, or disorderly eating habits can significantly impact one's physical health and emotional well-being. Counselling can help individuals develop a healthier relationship with food and their body, by providing a private space to express inner thoughts and identify triggers.

Overcome Life's Obstacles With Counselling

Whatever your situation, therapy can guide you towards clarity, strengthen your resilience, and help you take control.

Frequently asked questions

What are the costs of your counselling services?

At Brighter Days Therapy I offer different pricing options for adults and children. For specific details about my fees, please visit the pricing page.

What if I can’t afford the cost of counselling?

For those struggling financially or may be in receipt of income support, we can discuss reducing the counselling fees for a set period of sessions. I want counselling to be accessible, so please reach out to me so we can explore this further.

Can I see two counsellors at the same time?

This is not recommended as one therapy can conflict with another. There are some circumstances where you may be receiving mental health support from another agency such as CAMHS or Adult mental health, if this is the case, we might still be able to work together. Please contact me to discuss this further.

How often can I have counselling?

I do not see clients more than once a week. Having a minimum of a week between sessions allows for you to reflect and process what we discussed within the session. Some clients like more time between sessions and this is entirely up to you. The frequency of counselling sessions depends on your individual needs and goals. Many clients start with weekly sessions and adjust over time. We can work together to determine a schedule that suits you, whether it’s weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.

Can I bring someone with me to my counselling sessions?

At times it can be appropriate to bring someone for support, however the focus is always on you as the client. Normally if a client brings someone for support, they can join for a short amount of time during the session and then I will ask for them to wait outside.

Where do the counselling sessions take place?

Sessions take place in person. My office is based at Suite 19, Bourne House, St Helier, Jersey. As you enter the building go up the stairs and walk through the door on your left. You can find parking near by at Green Street Car Park or Snow Hill Car Park. If you are taking the bus, Grenville Street bus stop is near by.

What happens in a counselling session?

After attending an initial consultation, the following counselling sessions are 50 minutes long. As the client you lead the session, choosing what we talk about. Normally at the start of each session I will check in with you, see how you are and then ask you what you would like to focus on or talk about. You’ll have the opportunity to discuss your thoughts, feelings, and concerns. During the sessions I will listen and work with you to explore your experiences, identify challenges, and develop coping strategies.
